Great Blue Heron, Woodbury, Connecticut © Steven Willard
I stopped and parked the car when I saw the sun setting over the lake near my home. I wanted to get some images of bushes backlit by the sun. As I was trying to compose the curve of the shadow of the far shore with the curve of the bushes, I was startled when a great blue heron I hadn’t noticed lifted off just to my left. The unexpectedness of it scared the bejebus out of me.
I didn’t realise that I had captured the heron, flying toward the sun, until I first opened the image on my iPad. It was a wonderfully unexpected Christmas present.
I wish you all Peace, Blessings and Love for the season.
Panasonic Lumix G3 with 20mm f1.7 lens, processed on my iPad Air with Nik Snapseed®.
I love this. It’s mythic.

You certainly captured The Moment in this photo, even if it scared you! Just a gorgeous shot with the glassy water and the detail in the foreground. The background looks abstract, like an ink-blot test laid on its side. All brought to unnerving perfection with the crane and its shadow. This must be a photo you’ve printed and shown publicly.

I’m glad you like it. It has never been printed though I may print it for our next show this June.
