I don’t think you would have trouble finding a seat today. The fairgrounds are looking pretty rough these days, but it was a popular venue on the thoroughbred racing circuit, from the first race in 1940 until 1983. Races were held again in 1991, then faltered. On Memorial Day 1995 a tornado ripped through the fairgrounds and did considerable damage, and it looked like it was the end, but the grounds were rebuilt, and in 1997 racing returned, but for only one year.

In 2006 the property was purchased for $2.7 million, but things didn’t pan out and it was foreclosed on 2010. In 2012 it was purchased for $800,000 with yet another set of plans, but those never got off the ground. I guess some things just aren’t meant to be.
