Cat-tails

It rained hard last night

cats and dogs we used to say

the water rose and above the fray

naught to see but cat tails

waving by moonlight

I saw these cattails on my way to breakfast and was reminded that I had tried eating them as a scout. The rhizomes and young tender leaves are edible, too, but I’ve only ever tried the flower-the cattail portion. I managed to persuade my mother (who was a good sport but not usually that much interested in cooking) to help me gather and roast them. Thinking back, I don’t remember them tasting all that good, but we might not have done it right.
