Modern digital cameras with fast lenses and the ability to photograph successfuly using high ISOs have made it possible to photograph scenes such as this with very little effort; put the canmera on the tripod and trip the shutter, let science and technology do their thing. But first, you have to see the potential for an interesting image in the first place, and this circles back around to knowing what is possible with the gear you have.

Practice with the camera and your work flow/processing not only helps you become better aquainted with the gear, it aids you in seeing the possibilities through trial and error. The more photographs one takes, the more possibilities for successful images, and the better one’s eye gets at seeing and recognizing a good photographic opportunity.
