Still useful

I have kept my eye on this ghost of a sugar maple for some time. I pass the little farm it sits in front of on my way to work. Now it plays the part of a land mark; I imagine the farmer telling folks to, “look for the dead maple with the bucket.” The sap bucket has never moved in several years and is slowly rusting to a nice patina.

I have no idea when the tree last produced sap, but I’m glad in a way that the owner continues to let it stand, and stand for something. It’s good to be useful, even in old age when we aren’t able to do the things we once did. We should all be so lucky.
