I’ll bet you didn’t know that Robert Moses, one of the most influential, and controversial, architects of The Unted States in the twentieth century, and Karen Carpenter, lead singer and drummer for The Carpenters, were both from New Haven, Connecticut. It’s a small world.
I have my display prints mounted and framed at Hull’s Art Supply in New Haven, and just down the street is the Book Trader Cafe where this image was made. It is one of those places that seems particularly at home in a college town. Used books and specialty coffees are the principal attractions. I was taken with the play of light on the stools and floor tiles, but it was the poster portraits looking down on the courtyard that made the image for me. Don’t be mislead by the fact there are no customers in evidence, they were standing in line and just out of view to the left.
