Sunset, Washington, Connecticut © Steven Willard
This time of year, just days before the winter solstice, sunsets come early in the afternoon and the transition is quick; one minute it’s there and the next it’s gone.
I was driving some backcountry roads in Washington with my friends, Susan and Steven. We were looking for open fields, especially fields with some elevation. The hilltop fields means that the sun can come in at a lower angle and the sunsets last longer. I’d drive until one of us saw a spot with some potential, then I’d put the car in Park and we would all pile out and start making exposures. We worked fast because it was chilly, and a breeze meant we were quick to get back in the warmth of the car; then it was off to look for another spot.
I couldn’t always practice photography as part of a group, but with the right group I have a good time and a little friendly competition can be stimulating.

Stunning, simply stunning!!!!!! It looks like something out of the classic Barbizon School of painting!!! Brilliant.

The lacy branches, the reflections in the water, the rich color and dramatic sky make this a winning image. So glad I got to watch you make it!
