The question one might ask is, who is the “Outsider” here? The man in the red shirt sitting above the diners, or me, the photographer, who is completely outside, removed from the scene. It’s possible there was someone, unknown to me, who was watching me photograph the man watching those below.
I have been present at a national political convention, on the floor in the crowd, but not part of it. I have been present at a Beetles concert and been in he crowd, and was not part of it. When there with a camera in hand, and photographs in mind, one is apart.
It is the lot of the photographer as an observer; to be an outsider is where we must exist.
